PRISONER CHARACTERISTICS, STATES AND TERRITORIES

At 30 June 2013, the largest prisoner population was in New South Wales (32% or 9,897), followed by Queensland (20% or 6,076) and Victoria (17% or 5,340). Together, 69% (21,313) of the total Australia prisoner population was in these three states. (Table 14)



At 30 June 2013, the highest median age was in South Australia (35.9 years), which decreased slightly from 2012 (36.0 years). The Australian Capital Territory had the youngest prisoner population in Australia; however, the median age increased slightly from 2012 (from 30.7 to 31.2 years). (Table 14)



Males comprised between 91% and 96% of the prisoner population within each state and territory. (Table 14)
